Staying cool in the warm months of spring and summer seems tough, but it’s not impossible. You just need to know the right fabrics for these warmer seasons! Cotton is a popular clothing choice, but it’s not super-comfortable on hot or humid days since the material tends to absorb moisture rather than keep it away.

There are many airy and light fabrics out there that you can opt for instead. Here’s all you need to know:

Hemp

Hemp is a great alternative to wearing cotton on hot days. It’s grown from a plant known as Cannabis sativa, whose stalks are spun to create a usable fiber. This textile is incredibly lightweight and breathable and feels softer on the skin than cotton. It has unique fibers that get softer over time, revealing a new surface post-wash.

Hemp is also more durable than cotton, and the fibers can last around three times longer than a cotton shirt. You can wear a hemp shirt for 30 years without any issues! This material also has a natural resistance to microbes, mildew, and mold, so you won’t have to worry about trapped odors and sweat.

Linen

Linen is derived from the flax plant and is characterized by its quick-drying and breathable material. It’s a great option to stay comfortable on humid and hot days since the fibers don’t retain heat or air.

Linen is quite absorbent and can hold around 20% of its weight in water, making it the ideal material for someone who tends to sweat more. Its natural color depends on the conditions in which it was grown but usually ranges between taupe, gray, and oatmeal shades. The material is also completely biodegradable if it isn’t dyed, and the decomposition process begins within two weeks of it being buried.

Viscose or rayon

Rayon’s fiber is made out of the wood pulp of pine and beech trees, and sometimes, even bamboo. Also known as viscose, this semi-synthetic material requires certain chemicals to break the wood fibers into a weave-able yarn. It was created as a cheap alternative to pricey silk in the 19th century and is often used for Hawaiian style and camp collar shirts due to its thin fabric that drapes nicely over the wearer’s body.
